2 UNITS

At 2 UNITS, we are exactly what the name suggests, a couple of units who are passionate about horse racing. Our team comprises Dave “Sults” Strehlau and Nick “Footy” Foot, two mates who forged a strong bond through shared interests, chief among them being a love for thoroughbred racing.

Before the inception of 2 UNITS, we spent six years working together as teachers, sharing an office, talking nonsense, and analysing way too many 200m splits. Our obsession with racing grew over time, with most of our conversations inevitably steering back to the horses.

We love a good laugh, particularly at our own gear, and in March 2021, we decided to record our horse racing conversations as a podcast. Thus, the 2 UNITS Podcast was born, and it has continued to grow ever since.

We're just two mates who love racing, enjoy a good laugh, and have a lot of fun. It's as simple as that.

Dave Strehlau

Dave, or as he is more affectionately known as, ‘Sults’, is a thoroughbred racing enthusiast and form analyst, primarily focusing on racing in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia.

It wasn’t until the age of 25 that he began to develop an interest in the racing analysis side of the sport. Illness and some time off work saw him spending time at home during the week, watching the horse racing and in the process, becoming fascinated with all the different variables that can go into horse performance in any given race.

The prospect of a new challenge and the excitement of immersing himself in all things horse racing took over his life and from that moment, a love of all things racing began to run deep. Dave has love of analysing sectionals, times, data, replays and of course, the animals themselves. In December 2018, he started up a Twitter page and coined himself ‘The Sultan of Sydney’, where he offered tips and insight into races, with a leaning to a focus on NSW metro form. This quickly expanded to a focus on other racing jurisdictions and as time went on, his knowledge of the sport continued to develop and evolve.

Dave loves nothing more than backing a gutsy on pacer that gives their all and he learned the hard way that unless it all falls into place, back markers are money munchers! He plies his trade as a form analyst for the highly respected Racing.com team and has managed to turn his passion into a budding career.

Nick Foot

Born and raised in Hobart, Footy grew up in the 90’s, watching his Nan trawl through ‘The Mercury’ newspaper each Friday in search of the form guide to find her best bets for the weekend. This, coupled with his Dad’s love of a 4 horse boxed exacta, meant Footy didn’t stand a chance.

In 2012, Nick relocated to Melbourne to further his career as an AFL Field Umpire, setting up residence a stones throw from Chicquita Lodge at the back of the Flemington Racecourse. From here his passion for thoroughbred racing was truly ignited and he will be found spending the majority of his “off season” in the VRC members, socialising with mates and trying to back a winner.

Nick’s passion for racing and form analysis has taken him from a hobbyist to an exciting career in the racing media. He’s the host and producer of the 2 UNITS Podcast, a regular voice on RSN, a weekly contributor with Racing.com, and heads up the Lay Back with Betfair team.

Stable

The idea behind the 2 UNITS stable was formed when The Units travelled to Albury to meet the man behind racings most entertaining Twitter account, none other than Albury based trainer, Mitch Beer. The key theme throughout our discussions during the trip was around how to create positive experiences in racing and how to attract new people to the game at a basement level.

After numerous bao buns, bets and beers, the plan was hatched to delve into the Inglis Digital catalogue and find a $10k champion that would be suited to the Riverina area. Following some form analysis on The Units behalf and some health checks from Mitch, a 12 start maiden located at Flemington, MY BOLD BOY, affectionately known as CHIPPIES, was on his way to Albury.

After 4 wins on the Riverina circuit and a hell of a lot of fun, CHIPPIES was retired and re-homed and continues to live his best life in the Riverina.

SCISSOR ME TIMBERS (pictured) is the Unit Army’s current stable star, with his most recent two starts netting him a Maiden win at Nowra and a 2nd place at Metropolitan level at Warwick Farm. We can’t wait to have SMT back at the races later in the year.
